INTRANETS AND EXTRANETS
The Advantage of an Intranet or Extranet
The advantages of using a web based solution are that all operating systems and platforms offer many kinds of web browsers. From desktop computers to laptops to PDAs to even cell phones. And being web based means that it can be connected to from anywhere in the world, as if you were in the same office.
An intranet is an internal website offering services to employees. An intranet is not available externally or to the general public.
And extranet is a secure, controlled-access web service for specific users such as preferred customers or trading partners.
The hardware requirements for such applications are comparatively low to using proprietary software. Web hosting software, such as apache, requires little resources to run at full speed. And using a database server in parallel to store the information will be both fast and easy to backup.
One of the many advantages is that numerous existing tedious and repetitive methods can be replaced by an automated application. Saving both time and money. Before we begin development of an application we do a full case study of the existing processes we are planning to replace.
One example of an extranet we use here at Vision Networking is a ticket system for some of our clients on contract. Gaining access by entering their password they can fill out a support ticket, which is then reviewed and acted upon. All requests and actions are logged generating a full report of time spent and work done. This was a quick and efficient solution, and because the ticketing software was open source it was deployed immediately and without cost to the client.
